This spicy mackerel salad is a great addition to your regular snack platter! In the Netherlands, we have a long history with smoking fish. Especially mackerel and herring. By smoking the fish, the shelf life was extended and therefore more affordable/sustainable.
To spicy up this salad I added some grated horseradish. However, you can also use spicy mustard, chili paste or wasabi paste.
Spicy Mackerel Salad with Horseradish
Equipment
- Bowl
Ingredients
- 200 gram Smoked Mackerel
- 3 tbsp Quark
- 3 tbsp Mayonaise
- ¼ Cucumber or some pickles
- 1 Shallot
- ½ Green Apple
- 1 tsp Horseradish Paste
Top with..
- Radish
- Microgreens of cress
- Toasts
Instructions
Preparations
- Use a spoon to remove the seeds from the cucumber. The seeds may make the salad too watery and thin.
- Chop the cucumber, apple and shallot in small cubes and add those to a bowl.
- Tear the fish fillets apart and add them to the bowl as well. By rubbing the fish in between your fingers, you can check directly if the fish still contains any bones (and remove those).
The Salad
- Then add the quark, mayonaise, horseradish and grated zest of a lemon. Mix-up everything and season with salt & pepper. Feel free to add more quark and mayonaise to make a smoother salad. Love to spicy things up? Add more horseradish to your taste!
- Serve on toast with sliced radishes and microgreens / cress.
